TRAVELING HEALTHY
If you are planning a trip to Africa, Asia, Latin America, or Eastern
Europe, ask your doctor if you need a measles vaccination before you
go. The disease is still prevalent in many developing countries, and
even if you were vaccinated as a child, you may not be immune. Most
Americans born after 1963 received the measles vaccine, but scientific
studies suggest that immunity may wane and that the vaccine may not
work the first time on some people. A second shot is needed to
guarantee immunity. If you have already suffered the fever, cough,
runny nose, and rash, you should be safe; disease-induced immunity
lasts for life.
